The Robin – Bajeskwartier
From prison grounds to a vibrant, green city district for free spirits!
Amsterdam has gained a new urban area: Bajeskwartier. A district with a history. Bajeskwartier is becoming a circular, sustainable, and healthy neighborhood. An exceptional place that brings something new to Amsterdam: high-density urban living in a green environment, where you can stroll through a landscape of around seventy gardens. Much of the old prison wall remains and will soon serve as a plant and climbing wall.
Location
Bajeskwartier is located within the ring road in the Overamstel neighborhood in Amsterdam East, between Amstelkwartier and the Weespertrekvaart canal. You'll find various restaurants in and around Bajeskwartier. By bike, you can reach Dam Square in no time. The nearby Spaklerweg metro station takes you to Amstel Station in just two minutes. In less than five minutes, you can access the A10, A2, or A4 highways by car. Everything is nearby: the city center, the Zuidas business district, the Science Park, the popular Amstel Beach, or the green outskirts of the Amstelscheg.
Sustainability
Bajeskwartier is sustainable: circular and energy-neutral. The homes are well-insulated. The so-called mobility hub encourages shared transport: through a convenient app, you can access sustainable transport options such as (electric) cargo bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and electric shared cars. The Robin is connected to collective thermal energy storage (TES) systems provided by the ESCO provider. Solar panels on the ninth-floor rooftop garden generate energy for the TES system. Rainwater is collected on the roofs and under the ground floor, both to reduce strain on surface water and to irrigate the rooftop gardens.
Architecture
The Robin is a true eye-catcher, designed by the renowned Barcode Architects. Its height is inspired by the original prison tower; a lower level features a landscape of rooftop gardens, and the base remains open. The result evokes the image of a ballerina. The facades glow golden in the sunlight, but the real treasure lies inside: a six-story-high atrium, a spacious entrance hall that forms the warm, beating heart with red accents. This space can host exhibitions or public events.
Shared Rooftop Gardens
In addition to the private balcony, residents have access to green rooftop gardens and terraces on the fifth, seventh, and ninth floors. Here you can enjoy the lush rooftop vegetation and the magnificent views in this unique urban setting. These terraces are oriented to the morning or evening sun and offer breathtaking views of Amsterdam.
Landscape
Living in Bajeskwartier means living in a high-quality, semi-public area with approximately 68 gardens. Rich in greenery and water features, accessible to residents via cycling and walking paths. A car-free neighborhood! Cars are routed to the underground parking garage when needed. A central pedestrian route—known in prison slang as the "Kalverstraat"—runs through the greenery of Bajeskwartier and connects all the districts. The landscape plan was designed by LOLA Landscape Architects. A management association will be established for area maintenance, accompanied by a maintenance plan.
Facilities
The Robin includes a daycare center with a private city garden where children can safely play outdoors. There will also be a service center for residents' inquiries. The building provides access to Bajeskwartier's underground parking garage, where you can rent a parking space. This is also where you'll find the shared transport from the mobility hub. In addition, you can use the “Socie” neighborhood app for the Bajeskwartier.
